Main Topic:

Dr. Katie Lee will present " Long Live the Queen? Economics of Requeening Colonies Health".  Beekeepers frequently express concerns about queen longevity, as uncertainty around queen lifespan complicates decision-making in queen management. Many strive to replace their queens annually to ensure young, productive colonies, but the implications of this practice are not always clear. This presentation will explore key factors influencing requeening decisions.

Bio- Katie Lee is the University of Minnesota Extension Educator in Apiculture and co-coordinator of the Minnesota Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE) grant program. Katie earned her master’s and doctorate degrees in entomology from the University of Minnesota, specializing in honey bees and focusing on improving colony health. She spent six years traveling across the United States assessing beekeeper colonies for the nonprofit Bee Informed Partnership and managed over 200 colonies for a research project examining the benefits of pollinator plantings on pollinator populations. At the University of Minnesota Bee Lab, Katie develops educational resources for beekeepers. For SARE, she connects individuals with grants and educational resources to support sustainable agriculture.
