Main Topic:

Deborah Klughers will be presenting "Preparing Honey Bee Colonies for Winter" While this is not an introductory beekeeping class, it is suitable for new beekeepers as well as those with years of experience. I will cover the condensing colony management system in detail, as well as offer tips and advice for successful year-round beekeeping, including feeding, treating, and swarm management. Getting your bees ready for winter starts in January! You will learn methods to not only get your bees ready and through winter, but how to manage them year-round with the overall goal of successful overwintering. You will walk away with a greater knowledge of honey bee biology and best management practices to become a more successful beekeeper.

Deborah is a Certified Eastern Apicultural Society Master Beekeeper and the owner of Bonac Bees LLC. Deborah manages about 100 colonies throughout the east end of Long Island,NY,  providing beekeeping services to organic farms and residential estates. Passionate  about helping  unwanted honey bees, Deborah is an avid swarm saver, as she captures and relocates honey bee swarms and also performs “cutouts” (honey bee colony removal and relocation from structures). Deborah makes multi-award winning hive products, including honey, beeswax, and propolis, as well as value added products (cosmetics, food items, household cleaning products, mead, and more). She lectures locally and nationally, and has presented original research at Apimondia. Deborah offers demonstrations, consultations, and mentorships, as well as talks for schools, libraries, houses of worship, and local businesses. She is a strong proponent for honey bees and is active in honey bee advocacy.
