Welcome Apiary Members!
The Apiary Committee is dedicated to managing the MCBA apiary located behind the 4H Club in the fenced area to the left of the parking lot. Our primary goal is to ensure healthy bee colonies for educational purposes, including our beginner and intermediate classes. Additionally, we produce honey to be auctioned at our annual banquet, which funds the apiary operations, and provides valuable hands-on experience for all MCBA members. |
Organized by Christine Jefferson and composed of dedicated MCBA volunteers, the committee tends to the hives year-round. We rely on additional volunteers to assist with various tasks such as weed control, equipment cleanup, and inventory. You may occasionally see an email asking for specific apiary related needs for volunteers. This is a great committee to work with and start to become involved
Apiary Set Up: There are anywhere between 5 -6 hives and nucs in the Apiary at any given time. (The 4H youth club also maintains hives.) The apiary set up consists of hives that have a mix of deep and medium boxes. We also have nuc boxes available to use. The goal is to maintain a deep hive colony and a medium hive colony and a nuc colony- however, hive box set up will depend upon the current year situation and may change quickly. WE ARE ONLY RESPONSIBLE FOR THE MCBA HIVES. |
If you are looking to get some more experience in an Apiary, please sign up to assist with one or two apiary inspections.
Each visit will be managed/run by a current committee member and allows for 2 volunteer assistants iif date/time coordinates. This is a great way for new folks to get experience and see different scenarios.
